90% Merlot – 10% Cabernet Franc

The garnet-purple color is beautiful. The nose is complex (morello cherries, wild strawberries, coffee, old roses) fine and refined. The palate is juicy, lively and fresh. The mouthfeel is fleshy and caressing. This vintage expresses itself vertically, with a pleasant limestone tension, a beautiful minerality and saline notes.

Updated comments by Alain Moueix – 2017

“This is a vintage that marvelously expresses all that biodynamics can bring to a wine. The structure is chiseled, jagged, gothic. The power is there but expresses itself without demonstration. The wine has nothing to prove. I like wines which, like certain paintings, contain and give their full power without fuss. The 2014 is all about verticality, length and tension, without the slightest austerity. The effects of biodynamics are also felt in the quite exceptional precision and freshness of the fruit. Fonroque shows here a particularly refined facet of the potential of its terroir. ”

Chateau Fonroque is the birthplace of the Moueix family in Saint-Emilion. This property was bought in 1931 by Jean and Adèle, the great grandparents of Alain Moueix, who is now director of this lovely wine estate.
In 2005, as a logical progression of all the procedures undertaken by Alain Moueix and his team, biodynamic methods were implemented for the entire vineyard (started in 2002).

For Alain Moueix, this type of viticulture brings more coherence to his commitment to ecological and high-quality winegrowing. His motivations take into account the environment, the durability of the soils and an aim to bring out the best expression of the terroir as well as the intensity and fine balance of the wines.

Weather situation

The season got off to a good start with early budburst. Flowering took place during a dry and sunny month of June. The summer was more chaotic, cool and stormy. The vine was delayed and veraison extended over a long period. From the end of August, particularly hot weather set in long enough to lead to an unusually mild late autumn. The thermal amplitudes were significant and favorable to the maturity of the pips and the skins. As the weather remained dry, the berries concentrated well.
