The Beurer Riesling Schilfsandstein Swabian regional wine, dry, 2023, comes from vines rooted in the sandstone from which it takes its name. This sandstone has a horizontal, flaky structure and shows imprints of fossilized horsetails from the Triassic period, which were previously mistaken for reeds. However, this does not detract from the excellent soil properties. The sandstone here is completely free of lime, which alters the soil’s pH value and is thus noticeably different from that of the gypsum keuper soil. After selective hand-harvesting, the Riesling grapes are pressed and spontaneously fermented. Fermentation and aging take place in stainless steel tanks. After maturation, the wine is gently filtered and lightly sulfured.
Jochen Beurer’s Riesling Schilfsandstein displays a slightly deeper and clear straw yellow color. It offers aromas of ripe pears and peaches, as well as vegetal notes and a hint of dill. On the palate, it has a delicate acidity and a bit more body. The medium-long finish is characterized by a salty minerality. Slightly chilled, it pairs very well with seafood that is as natural as possible.
