Characteristics Château Mangot
If the wines from the Saint-Émilion area (a small town in Bordeaux, in the southwest of France) are special for any reason, it is for their coupage. This blend, which creates an infinite number of very interesting reds, is always based on three varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. These three grapes are the main ones grown and used by this area’s winegrowers and winemakers, making them the soul of wines like Château Mangot. The elegance of the Merlot, the aromas of the Cabernet Franc and the warmth of Cabernet Sauvignon are the bases of this red wine, produced by the Todeschini family’s winery of the same name.

Château Mangot is a wine made in the A.O.C. Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, specifically in the municipality of Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse, where this winery has 34 hectares of vineyards (entirely organic) divided into 21 plots. This site, which faces south between 35 and 86 metres above sea level, is special because of its mixture of soils: limestone, calcareous molasses and limestone plateaus. This variety combines with the rainfall (constant throughout the year) and the dry and warm summers, which are typical of the temperate oceanic climate, to create a very rich terroir, setting the perfect conditions for vine cultivation.

In this enclave, the vines are grown organically in order to reduce the environmental impact as much as possible. Château Mangot has now gone a step further, and since 2018 they have implemented new biodynamic practices. Obviously, all work involves respecting the soil and its structure, with manual labour and without using synthetic products or herbicides. After an exhaustive analysis in the vineyard (where the grapes are tasted), it is time to work out the right time to harvest. This work, which varies according to terroir, altitude and exposure, takes place on each plot separately. Once in the winery, the batches of Château Mangot are vinified separately, keeping intervention to a minimum and as natural as possible. This is all aimed at achieving maximum expression in the wines, and is possible thanks to the careful way in which sulphites are used, where they use half of the permitted amount for organic wines. Thanks to this, Château Mangot can express itself unhindered, and it is only necessary to guide the wine at this stage, without altering its natural course, respecting the style and personality of each plot.

Following alcoholic fermentation, Château Mangot is transferred to barrels, where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and is aged for a minimum of two years. Each batch will be cared for and cosseted, seeking the maximum expression of each variety. Finally, Château Mangot is blended, finding the perfect balance of each variety.
