It was one day July 1997 that René Barbier showed Christopher and his wife Charlotte an abandoned vineyard just north of Gratallops called “Figueres”. The same day the entire Cannan family jumped into their car and followed René to Barcelona. It was on a pavement café beneath Gaudi’s “La Pedrera” building on the Paseo de Gracia that we met a charming widow and school teacher, owner of the vineyard.

Clos Figueras Clos Figueres Priorat
“Clos Figueras is the personal project of Christopher Cannan, a veteran of the wine trade who created Europvin, one of the major wine importers in the world. The winery was created in 1997 and has 22 hectares of land, 12 of them planted to Garnacha, Cariñena, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Garnacha Blanca, Viognier and Chenin Blanc, with new plantings of Cabernet Franc, Viognier, Garnacha and Syrah in 2019, all in the village of Gratallops. Farming is certified organic, and they follow the biodynamic calendar but are not certified. The wines are under the charge of his daughter, Ann-Josephine Cannan, Silvia Puig and his Rhône friend Alain Graillot. Total production averages 35,000 bottles, and what I tasted this time I thought it was better than ever!” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
