Clairette is not often seen made as a wine on its own – it’s normally blended. But here it runs solo, and it’s a particularly good one that maintains its freshness, brightness and salty tang – there is a sherbet like zing towards the end that really resonates. Loads of white peach, green almond and tangy acidity – this is lovely and fresh.
Today, let’s take a little journey into the world of Jean Francois (aka Jeff) Coutelou, the vine wizard of Puimisson! He’s the guardian of 14 hectares of vines and a few hundred olive trees that stand like brave warriors, shielding his precious grapes from his neighbours unconventional farming antics. Nestled in the charming commune of Puimisson, a hidden gem in the heart of Languedoc’s Hérault department, Mas Coutelou has been whipping up wine magic for decades.
Now, here’s the kicker: Jean Francois’ dad laid the foundations of this organic paradise back in 1972, well before the whole organic trend became hip and trendy. Jean Francois beams with pride when he says, “We were doing this organic thing before it was cool!”
And why wouldn’t he be proud? In this region, Jean Francois is a beacon of brightness, freshness, and vitality. His vineyard is like an oasis in a desert of humdrum grape-growing. Cheers to Jean Francois and his radiant wines!
