Grapes: Monastrell & Syrah
.Place: Yecla, Spain
A mediterranean red with finesse that’s rich and brooding. Notes of blackberries, pepper, violets, cocoa on a full-bodied, rich and juicy palate balanced with silky tannins and a spicy finish.
Bodegas Antonio Candela is in an obscure and somewhat overlooked corner of southeastern Spain known as Yecla. Known by the Romans and the Moors, the area has known grapevines for over 2,000 years. an area known mostly for producing bulk reds, winemaker Antonio Candela shows this part of Spain’s Levante is capable of so much more. His vines are literally grown on rocks in a desert (see picture below). The terroir is very similar to that of Chateauneuf du Pape. There is no irrigation. These vines have to dig deep to find their water pulling in all sorts of mineral flavours in to the wines. The yields are low as there is not a lot of water and the temperature is typically very high during the days. However, the cool nights provide freshness and balance to the wines.
Pairings: slow braised, grilled, or stewed meats as well as cheeses and pâtés
